ACC motor vehicle levies fall

Driving is about to get cheaper. From July the average Motor Vehicle levy will fall by 12.5%. This means petrol will get a little cheaper too.

From July 1 2017, the average Motor Vehicle levy, which includes the ACC levy portion of the rego and the petrol levy, will fall by 12.5% — from $130.26 to $113.94 a vehicle.

The petrol levy component will fall from 6.9 cents to 6c a litre — a 13% reduction. Together these levies cover the costs of accidents on public roads involving vehicles.

Electric vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) will now be classed with petrol cars from 1 July. This means owners will pay a lower levy based on the vehicle’s risk rating.

To check what your rego will be, plug your licence number into the ACC's online tool.
