40,000 New Homes Approved – Now That's the Sort of Number We Like to See!

New HomesAfter a few challenging years, here's some genuinely encouraging news for New Zealand.

Stats NZ has reported that 40,581 new homes were consented in the year ended June 2026 — up 19% on the previous year.

Even better, it's the first time since 2023 that annual home consents have climbed back above the 40,000 mark.

That's not just good news for the construction industry.

It's good news for the entire New Zealand economy.

Every new home approved sets off a chain reaction.

It means more work for builders, electricians, plumbers, painters, roofers, landscapers, architects, surveyors, engineers, kitchen manufacturers, carpet suppliers... and yes, probably a few accountants as well.

More construction means more wages being earned.

More wages mean more spending in local businesses.

More spending means more confidence.

And confidence is exactly what helps an economy recover and grow.

It's also interesting to see where the growth is coming from.

> Stand-alone homes increased 17%.
> Multi-unit homes increased 21%.
> Townhouses and units were up an impressive 23%.

The five regions with the highest number of new homes consented in the year ended June 2026, compared with the year ended June 2025, were:

> Auckland with 17,097 (up 20 percent)
> Canterbury with 8,647 (up 33 percent)
> Waikato with 3,205 (up 14 percent)
> Otago with 2,982 (up 13 percent)
> Wellington with 2,217 (up 17 percent).

That tells us New Zealand continues to adapt to changing housing demand by building more homes where people want to live.

Of course, a consent isn't the same as a completed home.

There's still plenty of hard work between a set of plans and someone hanging the curtains.

But the important thing is that the pipeline is filling again.

And that's a strong sign that confidence is returning.

Let's just hope the builders can still find a pencil... apparently they've been using calculators so much lately they've almost forgotten what one looks like!

For me, this is another positive indicator that the New Zealand economy is continuing to recover.

One statistic on its own doesn't tell the whole story, but when you combine stronger business profits, rising exports, improving retail sales, increasing migration, and now a significant lift in housing consents, the picture is becoming much more encouraging.
